Peter and Kate Walugembe met in 2002. Peter was working with a ministry that cares for widows and orphans. He was in a music group that traveled to different schools, and villages sensitizing young people about HIV/AIDS as well as spreading the gospel through music. Kate came to Uganda with her University to volunteer at the same ministry where Peter worked. During her stay/work in Uganda, Kate and Peter soon realized that they both shared the same passions to care for the neediest of the needy people groups.

Since they became aware of the hopelessness and loneliness of many orphans and widows, they have followed God’s lead in ministering to them in a way that brings immediate love and everlasting hope. In 2003, they started their own ministry called Northern Lights Ministries. Their focus is simple: to advocate for, empower, and guide impoverished and disadvantaged families with Jesus’ wonderful example he summed up in Isaiah 61, “…the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives, and release from darkness for the prisoners.”

Peter and Kate want to be all about what Jesus was about. They do this through trauma and grief counselling for orphans and other victims of painful circumstances. Discovery Bible Studies empower and guide young people to read and understand the Bible which they then take this simple method to their homes, schools and communities. Income-generating projects help widows find hope and a means of supporting their families, while also learning about the love of Jesus.
